Banner ads come in different sizes and they are a very good source of traffic, well targeted traffic. With so many media buy sites now selling banner ads on CPM basis, finding places to place ads is no longer a problem. Banner buys can be gotten from sitescout, buysellads and adengage to name a few.
There are factors however you must have in mind. One of them is the banner ad size. One is easily taken in buy cheap CPM rates without actually considering how many visitors it will actually attract.
For instance, the first banner ad I placed cost me $105 with over 1,100,000 impressions. Its from a well respected media buy company so I jumped at it. They actually delivered the number of impressions which was impressive (forgive the pun) and was the good part.
The unfortunate bit was that I had only 120 hits to my link. I was shocked. I had already built castles in the sky estimating I should have at least over 3,000 hits at least and make over a $1,000 from my effort. I was devastated.
Why did I have such poor results. Its because I used the wrong banner ad size.
I used 160 x 100 which is actually quite small. Your ad size needs to be an appreciable size for it to be seen. It's a lesson I was to repeat 2 more times before I realized my folly.
My second ad cost me $30 for the same banner size for over 200,000 impressions but brought me only like 40 hits. I later placed a 125 x 125 with over 1,000,000 impressions but had only 90 hits.
It was when I placed an banner ad size of 728 x 90, that I had very good clicktru rates. It was initially like 8 hits in every 1,000 impressions but it declined in time to like 5 in 1,000.
I had learnt my lesson. That is why media buy gurus always advise you test and test until you find the one that not only converts, but converts well.
I hope this article will help manyof you save money when placing banner ads rather than using a hit or miss system.. Always ensure that the traffic on the site is well targeted, it converts and that the banner size is big enough and well situated to grab attention and a high clicktru rate.
